Hey y’all. Whew! I don’t know about you, but February was a whirlwind of good things and even greater work. It flew by so fast that I can’t believe that I’m now looking at March. At any rate, I wanted to give you another look at the mood boards I created for this month.
As you know, February is Black History Month, and what I decided to focus on this month was Black Joy. As a black woman, BHM has been a consistent part of my life. Unfortunately, the time can be so overpowered by historical figures and events, and the struggles that exist within the black community, that we don’t always take the time to explore the other parts of the black experience. So I decided to explore some of the things that give me joy. That’s why I created two living room mood boards inspired by a couple of my favorite black cult classics. Take a look.

Harlem Nights: I remember first time I saw this movie. I went in my parents room to hang out with my dad and he was watching and that’s when I remember the pinky toe. And if you’ve seen the movie, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Lol. Anyhoo, one of the best scenes is the first view of the club, Club Sugar Ray. It’s definitely a moment, and I figured this would be great inspiration for sitting room-style living room.

House Party: It’s such a completely different vibe from Harlem Nights, but still a quintessential movie in the black culture. I mean, you got Kid n Play in their prime, Martin Lawrence when he was on his way to becoming Marty Mar, Tisha Campbell, AJ Johnson, and who didn’t love John Witherspoon? There’s a bunch of other huge players, too, but that’s not what we’re focused on. Obviously, the set inspiration comes directly from Play’s crib, and I def wanted to create a look that was reminiscent of my Aunt T’s formal living room. You know the one: the space where you can look and never touch. Yea that one, lol.
This whole thing was a fresh take on some true nostalgia for me. It was such a joy to do, and it was definitely the moment for me. I loved it, and what’s crazy is that I’m not done creating great moments. Want to see more? Make sure you subscribe to this page. Like and share, too, so that I know you’re out there. Until next time!
