OK! Truth moment: I used to go hard on Pinterest. I mean, really hard. I curated everything: the pins, the board titles and groupings, even the boards themselves so you had a very specific view when you first went in. Now, my obsession has slowed down quite a bit, lol, but I still use Pinterest regularly for my own inspiration and to gather inspiration for my clients. Take a look at what types of things I look for in building inspiration.

Interiors: The easiest place to start in finding inspiration for any project is looking for a space that is similar to yours. It helps you get a full picture idea of what you want your room to look like. Take a Living Room for example. You can search different Living Rooms that capture what you want to do in your space. You can also search for a particular style to help you in defining the look as well. So maybe you pull together images of Mid-century Modern or Art Deco to signify your housing style.
Fashion: Believe it or not, style in fashion and style for your home go hand in hand. Your personal style sets you apart from the crowd to allow you to be uniquely you out in these streets. For those with a keen sense of fashion and style, or even those who have dreams about what they would like their fashion and style to be, you can use those images to help pull in ideas that could define pattern, fabric, color, and even the shape of furniture.
Culture: Culture is a really important one, because there are so many people out there who have connections with specific cultural norms and references that are extremely important to them. Maybe your family is from another country, or you grew up in a community with a very specific culture in itself. Exploring images that capture that culture help to pull in different references that will especially important to creating a space that’s personal.
Food: I don’t know about you, but I love food. I love the taste, I love the presentation, I love the prep, all of it. Food brings me joy, and food is also a great place to look for inspiration. Because there are so many types of food, you can use it to pull out shapes, colors, texture, and patterns. Using food as inspiration also helps connect with other senses you’ll use in the house, like smell. What kinds of smells would you like in your space? Pulling food images can help answer that.
Color: Now this is something that I do love about Pinterest. If you plug in a color in the Search bar, Pinterest will give you a huge plethora of images that match that color. And the types of images will cover all genres. You can get flowers, tattoos, cars, buildings, people, artwork, practically anything. Whatever has been attached to that color will appear for you. It’s definitely a great way to help define your inspiration if you are having trouble identifying some specifics about what you want.

Special Interests: When I say special interests, I’m referring to things like hobbies or personal interests you enjoy that will help create a space that is more defined. Maybe you’re really into music. Some of your inspiration could be album covers, concert fliers, or stills from videos. Maybe you’ve started creating manga art. There are tons of manga artists you could pull from in addition to images of specific shows and scenes you love.
Finding inspiration doesn’t need to be tough. And, once you find it, you’ll be able to communicate what you want in your space with more confidence.
