Let’s be real luvvie. You may not be looking to get traditional full-service interior design services for your space. So with the other options that are out there like edesign and DIY, taking your own before pictures is a must to see how the space has changed. Now, I am not a photographer, so I’m not about to give you a bunch best tips to take amazing images. What I will do, though, is give you some insight on which views to capture that best tell the full picture of your space.

Taking before images is really simple when you have the formula right. You want to make sure you have about 4-8 photos that specifically show different parts of the space. The very first thing you need to do is take images from the corners of your room, making sure your shot captures the opposite corner. If your space has an angle or more than 4 walls, choose the best corners that’ll capture the space. These views will give the best impression of what’s happening in the room, while still capturing how the space flows.

The next thing to do is to get clear straight-on views of openings to other rooms and closets. It helps to understand how the space will relate to the other areas surrounding it. Getting a good perspective on any closets will also help visualize your storage potential. Be sure to take pics of any rooms or closets with the doors closed AND open.
Capture the space you’re updating from an adjoining room. This works really well with open-concept and partially open spaces. Then check for vents, switches and outlets, capturing any extra images to make sure you are aware of their locations.

I have one final tip for you: Beware of close-ups! There may be times when a close-up image is needed, but for the mass majority of spaces, it’s not necessary. Pulling together an edesign can be extremely difficult when you only have a close-up of window and a cabinet. It’s extremely difficult to visualize the space that way. Instead, hold off on close-ups unless it’s absolutely vital to a design detail.
Thanks for dropping in today. Until next time, luv!
