Just Like Music

Have you ever performed on stage or given a speech?

Fun Fact: I’ve been performing in some capacity or another for as long as I can remember. My mom was a music teacher and the choir director at my church, and if you know anything about black church, you are gonna perform on the choir lol. It’s absolutely normal, too, to get speaking parts for plays, Sunday services and special worship experiences, like Youth Night or Revival. Not only that, I’ve been a part of some choir, instrumental group, talent show or musical since elementary school. Yup, performing is just a part of my life.

That experience has absolutely made it easier when chatting with my clients. In design, it really is about showing what you know, whether it’s through communication or through my own creativity and design. There’s a level of showing up, setting a stage, and sharing something you love with the world. And when it’s done right, it’s “just like music” (kudos if you know what song that is).

Performing has really taught me a lot about myself and other people, and I’m super glad that, as a family, we’re continuing that experience for the next generation. As of this writing my nieces and nephew just completed their winter concert at school, full of singing and instrumental goodness, and my daughter’s concert is set for tomorrow for her singing debut. I’m so glad that spaces have been made for us to have these beautiful moments. Tell me if you’ve had some of your own below.
