If you could un-invent something, what would it be?

I’ll tell you what I would un-invent: the V-chop in throw pillows. That’s right. I am an interior designer, and I loathe that chop in the pillows that everyone does. I want it to go away.

Now, I have no idea where this trend originated from. If I had to take a guess, it started because someone wanted the styling of the photos to seem more “lived in” by creating that indentation in the pillows. Which would be completely ironic seeing as how the current mood is that no chop means details are unfinished. But it’s a reasonable thought considering that throw blankets are usually included in the styling as well.

At any rate, here’s why it bugs me. It looks messy and ruins the pillow. When people see that V, they immediately throw their elbow in there and lean on the top of the pillow. I’ve seen it done so many times. It drives me crazy. Honestly, it only plays off well with a down-filled pillow, which means any other type of cushion is getting crushed and misshapen. Then there’s still concern because you’re crushing the pattern or fabric of the pillow cover. For me, it’s like ruining the pillow before it’s even had a chance to live.

Please, let’s stop this in ’23. Let the pillow be the shape that it was meant to be, without the V.
