The Forgotten Surface: The Ceiling

Hey, hey y’all. Can you believe that we’ve reached the end of January already?? I feel like just yesterday I was setting my goals and plan for the new year. February is right around the corner. Not to mention that we’ve had some big things happen every week since the year started, which, undoubtedly, helped make things go by much faster. Man oh man, time flies. So, let me not waste time and tell you all about my thoughts on ceilings.

Ok, now I know that most people aren’t concerned with what’s above them for the most part. We often are so focused on looking forward or looking down that we rarely look up, and I do mean that literally and figuratively. But I think it’s time we stop ignoring what’s going on above our heads and give it a bit more thought. For way too long, I’ve felt like we’ve treated the ceiling like it’s an unwanted stepchild, forcing it to fade into the background of all the other spaces; giving it the characteristics of moldings and trim as opposed to an actual surface. But if we’re going to spend all this time trying to figure out how to embolden our spaces with standout walls and eye-catching furniture, we need to make the ceiling a part of the process.

Now I know that when I talk about taking our ceilings to the next level, some of you may already be thinking about square-frame molding and linear, exposed beams. Ok, here’s my thing with that: those things are just so typical. You can find exposed beams or coffered ceilings anywhere, especially if you’re getting a new build. I want to challenge you to consider things with real intention and drama, creating an intense connection with design and interior environment at large(can you feel my passion? I got a little intense lol). Yes, there is a time and place for these things, but let’s look beyond typical and see how we can liven up our spaces in a more unique way.

Accent Ceiling: You know about accent walls? Now, apply that concept to the ceiling. Easy you say? No different than molding you say? Well, I disagree. How many colorful accent ceilings have you seen? Hmm? Let’s be real: we’re living in a sea of gray, white and tan in homes. Adding a color, and I mean a vibrant color, even if it’s black, to the ceiling is not typical, but it packs a punch.

Wallpaper: Listen, it’s almost like doing an accent ceiling, but with even more fervor lol. I am happily starting to see more designers take this approach in spaces, and it makes me giddy inside. Not only are you adding color, but you have the ability to enhance an extra level of intensity to the vibe you want in the space. It. Just. Adds. So much. Character! Ahh!! I love it.

Feature Lighting: Oh yes. Lighting doesn’t just need to be functional or decoratively falling from the ceiling. It can also give your ceiling pizz-ahhh. Yes, I just made that up. Or did I? At any rate, whether they be recessed, shadowed, or clustered, lighting can take an average ceiling and turn it fabulous.

Organic Ceiling: The plant life that gives me life. And thanks to the Vid, the growth of people bringing plants inside the home has rapidly increased. If you’re looking for a way to continue to clean the air and add nature to any space, this is a great option, especially if you’re running out of floor space for all your leafy babies.

Honestly, these are starter examples of what you can do up above, but there’s even more inspiration out there. If you want to see what other goodies are out there, check out my Ceilings Pinterest Board. Otherwise, you know what to do: like, comment and subscribe. Until next time wonderfuls!

  1. […] Yes luv, the ceiling. It’s our little forgotten surface (I’ve got a whole post about it here), but it definitely has space to hold some decor. Hanging plants are definitely top of the list […]
