I don’t know how it happened, but it’s TikTok’s fault. Ok, that’s not really true. I do know how it happened, but I still blame TikTok. AnimeTok opened the door.
I have a small, not so slight addiction to kdramas right now. For those who don’t know, that’s short for Korean Dramas. I was randomly on TikTok (another time waster of unexpectedly humorous rabbit hole proportions) and came across a couple clips of popular kdramas. There I was being drawn in by these random clips of utter drama goodness, when a couple clips of the same show stood out to me. It was about a woman who’d basically given her whole life to her family- husband, two kids, mother-in-law- and wasn’t appreciated by any of them. She suddenly falls fatally ill and needs a liver transplant that her husband chose not give her (mother-in-law wouldn’t let him do it either 👀). At almost the last moment, a donor comes through, and after recovery she decides to take her life into her own hands (Doctor Cha on Netflix-US in case you’re curious). The storyline is bonkers!
Anyway, I found this sucker and was Locked.In. You hear me? I played catchup on the first 6 or so episodes and then returned every weekend for the next two episodes until it was over. The writing on that series was just magical. And you the acting was good because I strongly loved and hated a couple characters. Bottom line, it was great storytelling, and I love a good story. Anyway, it made me want to watch more, and I started to get accustomed to the culture and how these writers approach stories. There’s a realism and maturity not only in subject but also how characters connect, and that’s not something that’s seen very often now. I mean between shows that ended ten years ago and new remakes of live actions that never should’ve been made to begin with, there’s a lot to be desired in the TV/cinema world right now. So being exposed to these really incredible story lines, I am soaking in all the goodness and wasting all the time. No regrets.
So then is it really a time waster if I’m enjoying myself? Why yes. Yes it is 😂. It sounds great to say that it’s not, but I’m staring at an overflowing basket of laundry right now so… ✌🏽.
